Team Members
Shaikhah Alkhadhr is a Ph.D. candidate at Pennsylvania State University’s College of Engineering. She has been a member of Almekkawy Ultrasound Imaging and Therapeutics (UIT) Lab for 4 years. She was granted a Kuwait University scholarship in 2018. Her research focuses on applying deep learning techniques to model transducers in ultrasound therapeutics. Her research interests are information systems and deep learning.
Haya Alshayji is a Ph.D. student at Pennsylvania State University’s College of Engineering. She has been a member of the Artificial Intelligence Lab for two years and has collaborated on cross-disciplinary research projects applying AI to problems related to healthcare disparities. Her research interests are machine learning, data science, and statistical modeling.
Shavini Athukorala is a MD candidate at Penn State College of Medicine. She received her BA in Psychology from NYU and her MS of Biomedical Sciences from Rutgers University. She was previously a Research Assistant at NYU, a Program Coordinator for Health Leads, and a Team Leader for New York Cares. Her research interests include systemic causes of health inequities.
Antoinette Hu is a general surgery resident at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. She is currently completing two years of full-time research in clinical outcomes with the Department of Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery at Penn State. She formerly worked for the digital healthcare communications startup company CareSignal (fka Epharmix) while in medical school. She is also a MBA candidate at the Penn State Smeal College of Business.
Cara Pearson is a MD candidate at Penn State College of Medicine. She previously received her B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Penn State University. Her thesis work includes cardiovascular fluid dynamics and ultrasound imaging processing with a focus on medical application. She previously worked at Merck overseeing development of pilot scale manufacturing for biologics, including Keytruda. Her research interests include integrating technology and healthcare together.
Lauren Pomerantz is a medical student at Penn State College of Medicine’s University Park campus. She received her BS in Neuroscience and minor in Chemistry from Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Her undergraduate research examined the use of mathematical models to display how neural communication works in the brain on a large scale, specifically in cortical networks. She formerly worked at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, as a clinical research coordinator in the Lymphoma service.
Randall Ung is an Emergency Medicine resident at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. He obtained his PhD in Neuroscience incorporating novel cellular techniques and advanced computational methods including computer vision and machine learning to better understand neural pathways and their involvement in behavior. His current interests include using AI to provide better care within the Emergency Department with a focus on neurologic pathology.
Chan Shen (Faculty Advisor) is an Associate Professor of Surgery and Public Health Sciences, and Division Chief of Outcomes Research and Quality at Penn State College of Medicine. She received her PhD in Economics and her MS in statistics from Rutgers University. She has a wide range of expertise in health economics, health outcomes research, epidemiology, theoretical and applied econometrics, and biostatistics.
