We hear from world-class speakers on thought-provoking healthcare topics related to AI, computer science, ethics, and more. The series leads entrepreneurs through considerations to help jump start ideas, address social determinants of health, and ultimately improve healthcare.

Ryan Howells is a Principal at Leavitt Partners based out of the Washington, D.C. office. Ryan has worked with the White House, Congress, HHS, and VHA on health care policy and interoperability issues. He currently helps lead the CARIN Alliance, a multi-sector, public-private alliance focused on giving consumers digital access to their health information. Ryan is a member of the CMS Medicaid Information Technology Architecture (MITA) Governance Board, Carequality Steering Committee, ONC’s FAST Identity Tiger Team, Technology Association of Georgia’s Digital Health Board, and the COVID-19 Health Care Coalition.

He also serves as board observer for multiple health care companies. Before joining Leavitt Partners, Ryan was the General Manager for the government business unit of a private-exchange software vendor where he oversaw the implementation of software in three different state-based marketplaces. He managed a multi-million-dollar P&L, and was involved in the company’s IPO in late 2014. Earlier in his career, Ryan led the government operations division for iHealth Technologies (now Verscend Technologies) and served as an Account Executive for numerous regional and national health plans.

API 101 Workshop

Supercharge your application development using application programming interfaces (APIs) and Postman, an API platform for developers to design, build, test, and iterate their APIs. Ruby Sattar, Senior Developer Advocate of Student Programs at Postman, will demo how to programmatically fetch up-to-date drug interaction data using an API. A Q&A session will follow the presentation.

At Postman, Ruby puts on livestreams, events, and workshops to spread API knowledge and literacy. She transitioned into a technical career from elementary school teaching and organizes gatherings for her local community of developers through Rhode Island Codes. Her favorite activities include: playing the ukulele and finding ways to bring technical learnings into classrooms and communities.

Kelly Michelson, I.AIM's Chief Ethics Officer, and Faith Summersett Williams, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, discuss ethics in the context of AI, health equity, and justice.

They set the stage by sharing general background on ethical issues related to AI before discussing concerns that come up in a hypothetical use case involving AI in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Another hypothetical use case will highlight ethical considerations when using AI/machine learning in the pediatric complex chronic condition population. Q&A follows the presentation.

Kelly Michelson, MD, MPH is Professor of Pediatrics, Julia and David Uihlein Professor of Bioethics and Medical Humanities, and Director of the Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She is an attending physician at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago in the division of pediatric critical care medicine.

Faith Summersett Williams, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. More specifically, she is trained as a psychologist, and currently works as a behavioral scientist in the Potocsnak Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine (DAYAM) at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital where she leads the research program for DAYAM's Substance Use and Prevention Program. Her academic interests are focused on health equity and justice to center the values and needs of historically marginalized communities.

Viet Nguyen, MD, Founder of Stratametrics, LLC, and Technical Director of HL7 Da Vinci Project, describes how the adoption of the HL7 FHIR interoperability standard, spurred by federal regulations, is setting the stage for transformation of the health IT ecosystem. Dr. Nguyen is the premier practitioner in this space and will talk about how the industry is leading the way in creating open access to healthcare data. Q&A follows the presentation.

Dr. Viet Nguyen is an internist, pediatrician, clinical informaticist and consultant to government and commercial organizations in developing interoperable workflows and technologies. He has two decades of experience in Health IT focused on interoperability standards and product development. Formerly the Chief Medical Officer for Lockheed-Martin and Leidos Corporation, Dr. Nguyen is a nationally recognized FHIR educator, an HL7 Board Member, a FHIR Foundation Board Member, CMO for Logica, and Technical Director for the HL7 Da Vinci Project.

This seminar will take a look at the spectrum of different incubator/accelerator models that can help teams move forward with commercialization of their ideas. The three panelists will describe their experiences with incubators and give insights into the innovation process. Q&A follows the presentation.

Nick Phillips is Sr. Director of Accelerator Programs and Healthcare at Nex Cubed, an accelerator and fund manager. To date, Nick oversees an investment portfolio of 28 companies with an enterprise value of $250M+ and manages programs in partnership with GE Healthcare, the Humana Foundation, Enterprise Singapore, and more. Yuan Zhang, PhD, MS, is Director of Scientific Operations at Portal Innovations where brings a passion for moving science from the lab bench to the patient bedside. Dr. Zhang bridges venture and lab operations, helping Portal portfolio and member companies derisk their technology in an efficient manner.


This video will establish the core principles and mechanisms of the US healthcare system, and also set the stage for a deeper dive into disparities.

I am general pediatrician/internist with deep interest and multifaceted activities in population-centered, timely health services and policy research within the context of community needs. I also have strong interests in interdisciplinary research that stretches over the lifecourse, and translational research that connects medical advances with community impact. My central areas of methods expertise are survey research and policy-focused analyses of health services data, and my areas of subject matter expertise include vaccines and health insurance.
